If you could take a pill and instantly have the body you desire or the book written, or the remodeled home of your dreams, would you take that pill?
One pill, BAM, you could have whatever you desire…
Many of us would probably opt for that: the quick fix.
We want the “quick fix” instead of experiencing the inevitable pain and struggle on the journey towards our goals.
That is because our brains, not fully evolved from our cavemen ancestors, are wired to keep us safe. Our brains love efficiency and keeping the status quo.
Because this is so, we often view struggling as a negative; something to be avoided.
This is why when we are seeking to do big (and small) things for our future success, we give up when it gets hard.
We, in essence, hide in our caves.
At the first sign of trouble, we often use buffers, surfing the web, scrolling Facebook, watching Netflix, eating cookies, to avoid the struggle.
Then, not only do we not have the outcome we want, but we have unintended consequences as a result: weight gain, self-loathing, guilt, shame and we stay stuck, rather than being propelled forward toward our dreams.
What if you viewed navigating the struggle to be exactly what you needed, a necessary part of the process?
What if failing was not only viewed as completely normal and totally expected, but the way to success?
What if there was no quick fix for a reason?
Here are my top four reasons not to desire a quick fix:
Struggling helps us to become more resilient and strong.
Trying something and failing allows us to experience all of our human emotions and we learn how to keep going no matter what.
We learn to rely on God instead of our own power.
We appreciate our accomplishments more when we work hard for them.
What do you want for your life? Do you want to start your own business, write a book, renovate your dream home, eat more nutritiously, exercise daily, or get your master’s degree?
Whatever your goal is, what if you allow yourself to go through the blood, sweat and tears of the process instead of expecting the quick fix?
What would you learn?
Who would you become?
How would you celebrate your success?
Let’s not desire or expect the quick fix; rather, let’s trust the struggle. Let’s allow it to be there, realizing nothing has gone wrong.
Besides, this struggle is, by far, the most beneficial part of goal setting. It is not the goal itself that matters. It’s who you become in the process of achieving your goals. Let’s grow, evolve, learn, overcome and ultimately crush our goals!
“There is no quick fix to impressive results that last. Stop wasting time trying to find the magic bullet and get to work.”
